A British Tradition, California-Crafted

Afternoon Tea in Long Beach

Three-tier service every Saturday and Sunday, 11:00 AM – 2:30 PM. Premium loose-leaf teas, freshly baked scones, and seasonal pastries from Executive Chef Danny Le.

What Is Afternoon Tea?

Afternoon tea is a light, mid-afternoon meal of British origin built around premium loose-leaf tea and a three-tier tower of savories, freshly baked scones with clotted cream and preserves, and delicate sweets. Traditionally served between 3 and 5 PM, the ritual emphasizes craft, conversation, and unhurried hospitality — an antidote to the rush of the day.

At Chez Bacchus, we honor that tradition while drawing on the produce and pastry technique of our California kitchen. Executive Chef Danny Le composes each tower in conversation with the season — what arrives at the bakery in spring is not what arrives in late summer. The teas, sourced from five countries and steeped from whole loose-leaf, set the tempo of the meal.

Loose-Leaf, Whole-Leaf, Always

Our tea program is curated like our wine list: a small library of considered selections rather than an overwhelming menu.

You’ll find single-estate Darjeelings from the foothills of the Himalayas, smoky Chinese keemuns, Japanese sencha, herbal infusions blended in California, and a rotating seasonal pour selected by the team. Each tea is steeped to its own time and temperature — never bagged, never compromised.

Afternoon Tea FAQ

What is the difference between afternoon tea and high tea?

Afternoon tea is a refined mid-afternoon service of tea, finger sandwiches, scones, and pastries served on tiered stands at low tables. High tea, by contrast, was historically a working-class evening meal served at a high dining table and included heartier savory dishes. In modern American usage the terms are often used interchangeably, but what most restaurants call “high tea” is technically afternoon tea.

When is tea served at Chez Bacchus?

Every Saturday and Sunday, 11:00 AM to 2:30 PM. Last seating is at 2:30 PM.

How long does the service last?

Plan for 90 minutes to two hours. We seat throughout the window so guests can choose the start time that fits their day.

Do I need a reservation?

Yes — both services book through OpenTable or by calling (562) 336-1440. Walk-ins are accommodated only when seats are available.
